Da Bole...It's Super!

Date: Sunday, Feb. 5
Time: 3:30pm (MST)
Where: Our Place
What: Superbole Party!

Since the expression "Super Bowl" is protected, and can not be used by anyone other than the Super Bowl people, it's a Superbole Party!

Now I wonder if it's too early to start planning an Olympic Party. ;)

It's Almost Over?

Man, why are weekends only two days long? :(

Yesterday we took a trip down to Cherry Creek, were lucky enough to get a table at Peet's and enjoy some warm beverages. It was pretty windy out, so walking around wasn't all that fun. We went into Sears where Geoff drooled over power tools, and I looked at garden stuff. Mostly neat things I could put in the backyard. I always remind myself I don't have to have everything now, we're going to be in this house for a while, so I can slowly transform areas to better suit my taste. Next we hit Bed, Bath & Beyond, where we bought a better rice cooker. Our old one would spill rice fluid because the glass lid had no seal to hold it tight. We bought a Zojirushi, which Geoff says is a good brand, and it got good reviews online. Here's what it looks like:

We also picked up a coffee carafe (or airpot if you like), to keep coffee warm and off the element when we have company over. Our friends like to drink coffee (we do too), and it's nice if you can keep it from burning.

I took Gary in for a car wash yesterday. I was going to hand wash him, but as I mentioned it was windy, and we were concerned that the water in the driveway might have frozen overnight, making for unpleasant driving.

Well, I should get ready for church. We watched Jaws last night, so I'll close with a quote from that.

Ellen Brody: Martin hated the water. He won't go in the water and he sits in the car when we go on the ferry to the mainland. There's a clinical name for what he has, I think it's...
Brody: Drowning.

Misc Thoughts

There are 7 houses for sale in the 2 block radius around our house. Just throwing that out there. :)

Scrubs had it's 100th episode on Tuesday night, and it was awesome! They've been knocking them out of the park since it returned to the airwaves, and for #100, Zach Braff directed a "Wizard Of Oz" inspired show. Very cool.

I am not ashamed to admit I've been tuning into Skating With Celebrities. What can I say, I am a Canadian girl at heart, and I have always had a soft spot for Kurt Browning. It's an entertaining show, though Geoff would disagree. In the future I will have to tape it, because it's too much to ask him to sit through an hour of figure skating.

Doug called me this week (whoo-hoo!) and I learned two things. One, I did not have his correct address so he did not get our Christmas card, and two Karen is pregnant. What is really cool is Doug lives right near Colin & Uncle Kim. Which is going to make seeing him super easy on the next visit.

Happy Birthday Rod!

I'm going to close with a quote from Murder By Numbers.
Cassie: You get one life, and whatever you do with it, and whatever is done to you, you've got to face that. You can't pretend it didn't happen.

A Little More

Each day, we're getting a little more sleep, as Elijah sleeps better. His cold is getting better faster than I expected, so we're definitely make it to Mom To Mom this week. Myrna is giving me one of her old gates, we both just have to remember to connect. :)

I'd been meaning to write about the super tasty yummy dinner Geoff made on Monday night. We weren't sure what we'd be eating, and despite having gone shopping on the weekend, we couldn't come up with a meal. I made salads and Geoff made a cheesesteak sandwich that we shared. Oh my! It was so good. When we finished, we just looked at each other wishing there was more. Mmmm.

Saturday night was the reception for my cousin Angela's wedding. I have heard virtually nothing about it, since both my mom & Dawn missed out by being sick that night. I'll have to call Colin to get some details. This would have been the first time he met Angela's husband Craig. I'd love to see some pictures, but that may not happen until I get up across the border.

I'm still fighting the travel bug. It's worse now that Geoff has been to San Fran, and talks about wishing we were there. I've got my eyes focused on SoCal though. We need to set dates some point soon, but I got some fun news about San Diego. Our friends Sean & Jen are going to come and watch the marathon with Elijah and I, showing us the best spots to see it. So that'll be cool. I was looking into hotels in San Diego since I hope we'll stay there more than a day. I would love to see Anna & Francesco's baby Julia, who was born last year.

We'll definitely take Elijah to Disneyland for the first time while we are there. Anyone who wants to join us is more than welcome (the more the merrier). Sure he won't remember it much, but it'll be fun for us. I'll go picture crazy! (Glen- you'll be thrilled to know Disneyland opened your favorite ride, Buzz Lightyear Astro Blaster!)

I'm going to close with a quote from The Matrix Reloaded.
Agent Smith: The best thing about being me... There are so many "me"s.

Robbie Burns Day

Robbie Burns statue, Glasgow

Have a great Robbie Burns Day everyone! Get out and eat some haggis, drink some scotch and read some poetry from Scotland's greatest bard.

Yeah the Broncos lost. What can you do? The Steelers played better. Where were the Broncos? It'd be easy to blame it all on Plummer, but it takes a team to win, so it must take a team to lose too. Clearly Pittsburgh is the stronger team, so I'll be rooting for them in the Superbowl (party at our place, 3:30, come on by!). I'm still thrilled the Pats aren't in (sorry Chris).

It's chilly here, which makes it less than pleasant for walking. I have to make it to the post office this week, though I don't know when I'll get the chance, Too cold to walk that far, plus Elijah has another cold. Poor kid has a runny nose, and he's not sleeping nearly enough (for naps or at night). So my plans for this week are to organize, and maybe get around to making Honey's appointment to see the vet. We want to switch to a new vet, one that is closer. We weren't overly attached to the other place, so it's not a big deal. Sure wish we could still see Dr. Jen. :)

I got a cork board/magnetic board for the loft/office. Now I can put up more pics, notes to myself, and things to remember. I'm pretty happy. I have 3 pics up currently, Laurel & Brooke's Christmas pic, Geoff & I at Disneyland (2003), and Cate & Kaisara by a hobbit hole.

I finished one of the books I got for Christmas! It was Canuck Chicks & Maple Leaf Mamas (from Meghan & Mike). It was okay, the first half of the book is about the kooky stuff women were told about marriage, sex, and life. The second half was a look at famous Canadian women. Probably only an entertaining read if you are a Canadian woman. The next book I think I'll tackle is Beauty Tips From Moose Jaw, by one of my favorite authors, Will Ferguson. (Athena, seriously consider doing a book club thing with me on this book!) I may even think about reading some of the fiction I got for Christmas.

Anyways, I'll close with a quote from Two Weeks Notice.

Lucy Kelson: George, I have an ulcer, I don't sleep well, mostly because you keep calling me in the middle of the night, and if you dont call me I dream that you're gonna call me. I think about you in the shower
[George gives her a look]
Lucy Kelson: ... not in a good way, but in an I'm-so-distracted-I-can't-remember-if-I-washed-my-hair kinda way - so I'll wash my hair twice! So I have a hole in my stomach, I'm running out of shampoo and today is the first day in my life that I did not give a thousand percent on the job. And I hate that feeling.

Happy Birthday Glen!

'Cause Apparently It's Important

I thought I'd blog, though I don't feel like I have much to say. But with Diane & Glen in Mexico, they are using my blog to keep up to date on what's going on.

Plan for the weekend is to clean house today, because tomorrow we have couples group here. I hope to make a coffee cake today for snack tomorrow. I've never made a coffee cake before, so I'm scouring my Joy Of Cooking book for a good recipe. I actually look through my JOC book often, I also browse recipes online at foodtv.com. I did make a tasty ginger bread once, but ginger just seems so seasonal. Well we'll see how the day goes. I also bought some grapes for tomorrow too. And we'll put on a pot of Peet's coffee, which always goes over well.

I was talking with Myrna at Mom To Mom this week, and she offered to watch Elijah for a few hours if Geoff and I want to go on a date. I am keen on taking her up on the offer, I'd like to get out and see even one movie that I know will be Oscar nominated. So I have something to root for. If Geoff isn't keen on a movie, Myrna said she'd love to go out to the movies. I toyed with the idea of throwing an Oscar party, I haven't in a few years, not since California, and it was a Lord Of The Rings theme ('member Cate?). I probably won't, since that is the weekend of Elijah's birthday (his is on the Monday), and we'll likely throw a small gathering.

Back to Myrna, there was one movie we agreed we both wanted to see, and then she surprised me by saying she wanted to see Brokeback Mountain (which I don't want to see). I'd been meaning to post that I think GLAAD is being ridiculous for lashing out at a movie critic for his interpretation of Brokeback Mountain. He described one of the characters as a "predator", and GLAAD was up in arms saying he didn't understand gay relationships. I find it extremely annoying when people tell others their interpretation of a movie, poem or book is "wrong". It's someone's opinion! Their life experience taught them to see things as they do. One critic doesn't like the movie, and they jump all over him? Seems silly to me. You have all the other critics and award shows shouting your praises, give it rest people!

That's just my opinion, feel free to harp on it. :)

Well, I should get on cleaning while the boy is sleeping. I'm going to close with a quote from The Wedding Singer.

Mr. Simms: Do you have any experience?
Robbie: No, sir, I have no experience but I'm a big fan of money. I like it, I use it, I have a little. I keep it in a jar on top of my refrigerator. I'd like to put more in that jar. That's where you come in.

Craziness

When I woke this morning, I thought Geoff was here. I could hear Elijah fussing and thought why isn't he getting up to get him?

I had a dream last night about my old friend Barry, who hates being called Barry. Probably because it isn't his name, but he just never seemed like a Rick to me. I can't recall specific details about the dream, other than we were talking and catching up on the last few years. I haven't spoken to him since 2000, I think. We just drifted, with us moving, and also he dated our friend's ex-girlfriend. Which is a no-no. Unless of course the guy consents. But he was never given that option, so it just seemed like an underhanded thing to do. It was unfair to him that I was willing to forgive the girl involved before I forgave him. But as I said, we also just drifted apart. I heard he got married, and I guess he's doing okay. We don't have any mutual friends, so I don't really know much more than that.

It seems pointless to try to reconnect that friendship, as it's been so long, and I already have a ton of long-distance friendships. Plus he never was good at keeping in touch. But I don't think poorly of him, I look back on those years of friendship between us (him, Geoff & I and our little clique) and I smile. It's always odd to dream about people you haven't seen in a while.

It's funny how some relationships are so easy, and some are painful/annoying. There are so many factors that make them one way or another. I find it easy to be friends with people you haven't known for long, as there is so much to learn about them. Unless that person is unwilling to share past a superficial level, and then you always stay at a "aquaintance" comfort level. I have a few of those. It can be annoying, but I'm learning to let that go. If they don't want to move into a different place, then they can stay there. But you can enjoy that friendship, you just have to set realistic expectations about that person. Don't expect more from them than they are willing to give.

With someone you've known forever, there is a safety, a comfort in knowing they've seen you through so much. These can be work, as you don't want to get stuck rehashing the past, but you want to continue to build on the foundation. You continue to find new things you share in common, and you continue to build that trust, build that relationship. And yet there can be people you've known forever, and you feel like you don't really know them at all. They changed, you changed, and you both drift. I'm not really sure how that is repaired.

I guess new friendships for me are pretty easy. I am willing to make new friends, allow myself to be vulnerable, take that chance. It was hard to do that when we first got to CA, but it paid off in spades. I made some of the best friends of my life, and I got a family out of it too. You don't have to go to church to do it, but you do need to break out of your box, get out there, and interact with the world. It's too easy to stay indoors, squirrel yourself away, find excuses.

Wow. okay. That was cool.

As the title suggests, I got qutie the surprise today. I gave Elijah his bottle, then went upstairs to file something away. I got distracted reading something, and when I returned to the stairs to go back down, Elijah was in the bathroom at the top of the staircase. Yeah! He silently climbed the stairs while I was gone for 3 minutes. Yikes! Myrna says she has a gate at her place she isn't using, so either I'll borrow it, or we're going gate shopping this weekend. Problem is at the bottom of the staircase, we have two wide stairs, so the gate will have to go on the third step. And at the top, there is no wall to secure a gate, so if I got one, it would have to be to block in the loft. Well, Geoff and I will look into it this weekend.

That's about it from here. Tomorrow Geoff comes home. It will be nice to have the family all together again. :) In honor of that, I'll close with a quote from Return To Me.

Megan Dayton: Whatever you do, don't shave your legs.
Grace Briggs: Why?
Megan Dayton: Well, then you definitely won't let it go too far.
Grace Briggs: Megan! It's a *first* date!
Megan Dayton: Yeah, well, I married a first date, missy, and you know how it is. You're out with a guy, you find him attractive, and suddenly everything he says sounds brilliant. Hairy legs are your only link to reality.
Grace Briggs: I think you should needle-point that on a pillow.

Happy Birthday Andrew!

It doesn't hurt to get any older. :) Have a great day, 2006 is gonna change your life. Can't wait to hang with you again.

California Rocks!

I dunno that I can say enough about how much I loved my weekend in Irvine. Let me try to list all my favorite moments in order of date.

-Eating In-N-Out as soon as I got to Irvine.
-Having all the Kroliks, the Gustafsons, and the Stanleys meet Elijah.
-The look on Sharon's face when she came back into the office.
-The scream Julie made when she saw us in her house.
-Being able to walk around in my t-shirt, capris and tevas.
-Spelling athlete in the boggle game with Lexi & Cindy.
-Elijah in the swing at the park.
-Showing up at Jen's house and having her say she had wanted me to be her surprise.
-The big smile on Cate's face when she saw me through Jen's window.
-Asking Jen & Greg, and Cate & Kaisara to be Elijah's godparents.
-The parking lot standoff between me & Ashley, and the laughter that ensued.
-Seeing the few familiar faces at church on Sunday, and the picture I took of Chuck & Elijah.
-Having Lexi help me at Color Me Mine, and Cindy's gift (I can't wait to get it in the mail).
-Amy babysitting Elijah.
-Watching Kevin & Elijah bonding.
-Making Lexi & Ali laugh; "give it to me, give it to me".
-Coldstone with Ali.
-Poker with Kevin, Jake, Ali & Cindy.
-Seeing Elijah climb the staircase.
-The deep talk with Lexi on the way to L.A.
-In-N-Out before the airport.

I had the best time, I love the Kroliks. Despite what Alec says, I am family to them. They love us, and you never met nicer people. Jake, Cindy, Ali (Kevin), Ashley (Chris), Amy, Alexis, Alyssa, Alec & Abbie. It was a great weekend. Do I want to move back there? Naw, I love having my own house, and I couldn't have that there. The goal is to get them all here, or at least to get them to visit frequently.

I'll close with a quote from She's All That, for Lexi & Ali.

Zach Siler: Brock Hudson? What kind of a name is that?
Taylor Vaughan: What kind of a name is "Zach?" OK, Brock is from "The Real World."
Zach Siler: What, Resceda?
Taylor Vaughan: No, like the TV show. "Real World LA", second season, hello!
Zach Siler: The dyslexic volleyball guy? They kicked him out of the house.

My Birthday Gift

For my birthday, I decided months ago that I would fly to California and surprise my friends. Since practically no one out here (save a few Kroliks) had met Elijah, and Geoff was going to be away for so long, I made plans to fly out to the coast after my birthday. Only the Kroliks, people married to Kroliks, Greg & Kaisara knew. It was hard not to tell anyone, or blog about it.

We flew out Thursday morning, and once I got off the plane in L.A., rented my car and drove down to Irvine, it was close to 2pm. We've been having a great time. I really missed the people here, I really missed the weather. What is keeping me grounded in reality is that there is no way we could have the house we have in CO here in CA for the price we paid.

Surprising people sure has been fun! Last night I had dinner with Greg & Jen, Cate & Kaisara. The looks on their faces, matched with the smugness of hubbies proud to have kept a secret was funny. Elijah has turned on the charm for everyone here. Enough to get people to move to Colorado? Maybe not, but a few trips have been planned for visits to see us.

This morning we'll go to the old church. Tomorrow we'll fly home and reunite with Honey cat. I will try to post pictures Monday night. Then Geoff is home on Thursday. Yay!

That's it. I'm thrilled to say that Denver beat the two-time Superbowl champs New England (boo Pats!). Let's hope Shanahan & Plummer can take us all the way. Go Broncos! Fox isn't airing any new House episodes until February. So I'll close with a quote from that.

Dr. Wilson: You really don't need to know everything about everybody.
Dr. Gregory House: I don't *need* to watch The O.C., but it makes me happy.

So It Begins...Or So It Ends

Got this email today. I'm super stoked!

Friday the 13th
January 2006

Less than two weeks after 2006 arrived amidst great excitement and optimism, something terrible happened at 12:01 a.m. this morning: Friday the 13th arrived.

Under normal circumstances, today’s date would be unfortunate. This year, it is even more ominous, a word which here means “extremely worrisome.” That is because this terribly unlucky day occurs TWICE in 2006.

Associates at LemonySnicket.com predict that the second time, Friday, October 13, will bring The End. Of what, however--the Baudelaire orphans? Lemony Snicket himself? Thursday, October 12th?--remains unclear.

There is much to fear in the coming months--alarming puzzles, distressing notations, a series of communications from someone named Beatrice. All of us at AuthorTracker will continue to try to locate the elusive Mr. Snicket, gather information, understand the truth, and share our findings with you.

Still, we are sorry to ruin your year after only 12 days. Perhaps 2007 will be cheerier.

With all due respect,

Harper Collins Publishers

Happy Birthday To Me!

For My Apple Lovin' Hubby, And All My Mac Friends

Boys Rule!

I'm getting another nephew! Whoo-hoo! I can hardly wait to meet him.

Wish You Were Here

Sigh, I miss Geoff. :(

I have a countdown clock to remind me how long it will be until he's home. We haven't been apart this long since July 2001, when I went to E-Town for my mom's wedding, and Lisa & Chad's wedding. Before that, it was the two weeks I went to E-Town for Dylan's baptism in 2000. So it's not unfamiliar for me, it's just usually I'm the one off galavanting, and he's at home. Also new is the little man who misses his daddy. Elijah cried at the airport when Geoff left.

Not much else is going on. I have to take a trip to the post office today, and stock up on stamps, since they raised the price. I already took a trip to Target this morning, had the whole store to myself practically. I hope to continue organizing our filing cabinet while Geoff is away. We've shredded a ton already, and it's so great to see progress.

I'm hoping to hear some exciting news about my future nephew or niece today. I'll keep you posted as I learn stuff.

I watched 28 Days last night, 'cause you all know how I love Sandra Bullock. It was a good movie. So now I'll close with a quote from it.

Betty: Tonight's lecture: "What's wrong with celebrating sobriety by getting drunk?"

Early Celebrating

Let the birthday celebrating begin!

Last night I opened my presents (that were here), knowing I was getting some DVDs and wanted to watch something last night. Today we'll go out to dinner, and we'll make my cake, but we won't cut into it until tomorrow. We are having couples group here tomorrow, and birthday cake is best when it's shared with others (IMHO). I did get some money, so now begins the hemming and hawing of what to spend it on.

I'm awful like that. Do I buy myself some clothes, or do I dare buy myself something off my Amazon wishlist? Do I save my money? Sigh. I'm sure whatever I decide I'll like it. :)

Busy today. Off to Peet's and a trip to Crate & Barrel to buy dishes. I got a gift card for Christmas, and we ordered another gift card with our AMEX points. We want to get a set of dishes that we use when we have company over for dinner. Especially since we love having friends over for dinner. Here's what we're thinking of:

Simple and easy to coordinate with any color.

I'm not freaking out about my age this year. My life is fantastic. I have a wonderful little family, we have a beautiful home, and I have family and friends (near & far) that fill my life with joy (and a little drama sometimes too). Could life get any better?

Friday's Random Ten

Accidentally In Love - Counting Crows
Sunday Morning - Maroon 5
Yeah! - Usher
Float On - Modest Mouse
Over My Head (Cable Car) - The Fray
Jerk It Out - The Caesars
Let Go - Frou Frou
When All Thy Mercies - Fernando Ortega
Bad Day - R.E.M.
Hey Ladies - Beastie Boys

Canadian Politics

Just for kicks, I took a quiz to find out which Canadian PM candidate I am most aligned with. I am not eligible to vote, I've been out of the country too long, plus I have no intention of returning. This equals me not being able to vote. And really, why would I if I could? I don't live there, if the country wants to go to hell in a handbasket, it's not up to me to save it.

So I wasn't all that surprised to see I was 100% aligned with Stephen Harper, the Conservative Party candidate. That's pretty much where I was aligned 6 years when I left Canada.

Anyways, good luck to those in the Great White North with your election this month. Get out and vote!

To My Best Friends...

Who had two very different days.

Lisa- glad I could help you organize your thoughts. I'm proud of you sticking to your guns. And it's great that Jenn has your back!

Athena- I'm glad you & kidney bean are okay. Take it easy, and we'll chat again tomorrow.

Andrew-

Happy Birthday Diane!

Saying Goodbye

Imagine my shock and sadness as Elijah and I walk into Harry & David yesterday to see a huge red "Store Closing Sale" sign. Kevin was the only one there, so I said,
"you're closing?!"
He just smiled a disappointed smile, and said "yeah."
"what? I think I could just cry."
"yeah, we've all done that. They told us after the Christmas party last week"

When I asked him if people were going to transfer to other stores, he got that smile on his face and said,
"no. they said they have all the staff they need from their temporary Christmas staff."

So the fact that Kevin is an asst. manager means nothing, he'll be unemployed by months end. Nicole too. She showed up a little later, and got in her Elijah time. They have a special bond, since she's seen him at least once a month since birth. :) I told her I'd go wherever she works and visit.

So yeah, Mom, Diane, no more H&D at Cherry Creek. We can still get H&D products, there is a store right near us, but no Kevin or Nicole.

On a much lighter note...

The day we brought cookies to Myrna's house, we hung out with the family (4 kids + husband) for 40 minutes. The rest of the evening, Myrna's two-year old Emma kept asking her, "Where's Lijah?" We're going over next Tuesday for a play date and brunch. :) Yay!

I think we'll celebrate my birthday this weekend (it's on the 11th by the way). I think we'll go to Outback, since I love it, and haven't been in a while. I'd like to make Pat's yummy angel food cake, with the caramel whipped cream frosting and crushed heath bar.

Well, I'll be signing off. I'll close with a quote from Anchorman, for Mike. Watch it again, I swear it's funny.

Ron Burgundy: Last time I looked in the dictionary, my name's Ron Burgundy. What's your name?
Brian Fantana: Brian Fantana.
Champ Kind: Champ Kind.
Brick Tamland: Brian Fantana.
Brian Fantana: No, you're Brick.
Brick Tamland: Brian.
Brian Fantana: I'm Brian.
Brick Tamland: Veronica.

Scrubs Is Back Baby!

The long wait is over, Scrubs returns tonight with *two* new episodes. I had almost forgotten where things were left last season.

In other tv news, I love that Fox has been airing reruns of House on Mondays. I'm getting caught up, slowly, but I'm getting there. I'm also not ashamed to admit I watched 4 of the 5 nights of Deal Or No Deal. It was entertaining, and even more fun to talk about with my peeps. ;)

I'll close with a quote from Scrubs.

Janitor: Gentlemen. Crazy-Eyes Margo. I've called the Brain Trust together for one reason. I have to find a way to make Blonde Doctor mine.
Randall: Burn down her apartment.
Troy: I have an idea. But we're going to need a tugboat.
Janitor: Tugboats and arson, that's all I ever get from you guys.

I Ain't No....

First Post Of 2006

We are party animals! We managed to stay up until midnight, and it wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. We were going to watch a movie, but I thought I'd need something more stimulating to keep me awake. So we opted for the Monty Python marathon and Yahtzee! We drank some Martinelli's and called Glen & Diane in Victoria (though it was only 11pm their time). Elijah stayed up until about 8pm, and woke us at 6am. He sort of hung out in his crib until 7am, and then insisted on getting up.

I made sausage mcmuffins for breakfast (I should come up with an untrademarked name for those), and enjoy lazing about before I had to go to church for 10am. I am scheduled to work the nursery the first Sunday of every month, but Daddy & Elijah stayed home. They bonded watching one of Elijah's movies he got for Christmas, and I have to say I was jealous. Elijah never snuggles on the couch to watch movies with me.

The rest of the weekend has been spent cleaning the house. This week doesn't hold too much. I may try to get together with my friend Myrna, and I will call Mary and play the phone tag game. :) Geoff leaves on Sunday night, so we'll get in as much family time as we can.

I'll close with a quote from Ocean's Twelve.

Turk Malloy: Come on, he's one guy, and he's French.
