Happy Halloween!

Here are the photos of our pumpkins.

Here's a picture of Geoff's at night, before the pumpkin rebelled and threw himself off the rail.

Interesting

Thanks Roland.

commoner
COMMONER

You are the Commoner, often
put down and yet surprisingly one of the most
valiant and true characters in fantasy. The
Commoner may be average or plain in appearance,
and yet they are the most likely to possess
noble and unique characteristics such as a
sense of honor, honesty, and deep loyalty. They
are also very loving and dedicated. If they
take up a cause you can bet they will see it
through the very end.

5 Things

Here are 5 Things that made my week (in no particular order):
1. Having family & friends say nice things about me (on their blogs or on the phone).
2. Watching the hockey game with Geoff (even though the good guys lost).
3. Having my order from Amazon arrive.
4. Nice weather.
5. Vh1 airing I Love The 80s: 3D all week long.

So when I look in the mirror and see that annoying pimple, I can think hey, it hasn't been that bad a week. :)

My Mom

1. Growing up, I always loved your clothes, and couldn't wait until I was big enough to wear them.
2. Mermaids. Because (like us) after all they go through, they are able to love each other for who they are.
3. Orange.
4. California Pizza Kitchen
5. I couldn't tell you my clearest or first memory, so I'll pick a random one: Having my stitches taken out in a hospital in Calgary.
6. Lioness.
7. What did you want to be when you grew up?

Meghan

1. you have the most diverse taste in music of anyone I know.
2. dead again (K.B. is so awesome in that movie).
3. raspberry.
4. Bubbles. :) (well, maybe it's not just between you & me)
5. walking you home from school w/ Geoff & "would Melissa like some gummies?"
6. cougar
7. Don't you find it ironic you married a mascot after all those years of being afraid of people inside of costumes?

Athena

1. I like your laugh.
2. You're My Best Friend - Queen (the lyrics not so much, but the title was perfect).
3. lemon.
4. skimpy. revelations even w/o the beer.
5. the day we met, I felt comfortable talking to you right away.
6. a swan.
7. why did you change the spelling of your name?

I May Live To Regret This

Melanie did this for me, and it says at the bottom you must post it on your blog if it is done for you. Please do not submit if you don't have a sense of humor, as who knows what I may come up with.

Leave your name and:
1. I'll respond with something random about you.
2. I'll tell you what song/movie reminds me of you.
3. I'll pick a flavor of jello to wrestle with you in.
4. I'll say something that only makes sense to you and me.
5. I'll tell you my first/clearest memory of you.
6. I'll tell you what animal you remind me of.
7. I'll ask you something that I've always wondered about you.
8. If I do this for you, you must post this on your journal (if you haven't already).

Mother's Intuition

Athena had a feeling (so did I), and the feeling was not wrong. Andrew & Athena are going to have a daughter. It was so exciting to hear. Now the rumors of an arranged marriage have begun. Hee Hee.

Blah Blah Blah

We kept busy this weekend, doing chores, getting our house in order. Saturday we hit the ol' stompin' grounds, Cherry Creek. Took in some shopping, then did our grocery shopping. Geoff came home and did manly chores, and I tried to amuse a baby teething. Sunday we did church, and bought the Halloween candy at Walmart. Hopefully enough to appease 100 kids. Then we cleaned the house and finally unpack the boxes in the loft. All that is left to get the house organized is a filing cabinet. We have 5 years worth of receipts in office boxes, and a ton of papers we don't need but wouldn't dream of throwing out without shredding first.

Tomorrow we head to Bonfils to donate blood. We've been waiting until we got settled from the move, and we know there are people out there in need. Well, they don't need me, but Geoff's blood is very coveted. Tomorrow we're also getting the sprinklers winterized.

Those are the big plans for this week. I know we lead an exciting life. I invited my cousin Kelly (and her fella) to come here for Thanksgiving. I really hope they will consider it. Haven't seen Kelly since she came out to CA. And her fella is Canadian too, so I foresee a game of Trival Pursuit Canadian Edition! Kelly won last time, so I'm sure she'll be game. :)

I've been yakking on the phone a lot this last week with my friends. Usually I prefer email or IM to a phone call, but it's been fun. The conversations can move faster, and I feel like I get more out of it. It also helps to have stuff to talk about.

I'm not even going to comment of the Oilers getting spanked by the stupid Avs. It's just too painful. :(

I'm closing with one of my all time favorite quotes, courtesy of The Usual Suspects.

Cop: I can put you in Queens on the night of the hijacking.
Hockney: Really? I live in Queens, did you put that together yourself, Einstein?

Stop Draggin' My Car Around - Weird Al Yankovic

Finally!

The Dilbert comic was a direct result of frustration with Sofamart and having to wait a month for tables we ordered. We finally got them on Tuesday. I am going to be writing a letter to Sofamart letting them know while their product is great, their service leaves much to be desired.

So here are pictures of the coffee table and end tables we ordered.

Now, I need some bedside tables!

6 miles was way too far to take on. I was so pooped when I got back, but I called it, it was 45 minutes to get to the post office. And they had the nicest people working there. I also met my postman when I returned home, and found out that in the case that my packages don't fit in the mailbox, he'll deliver them to my house. Whoo-hoo! Bring on the big Christmas boxes! :)

If I plan to get on sending my packages early, I need to get shopping. I have 3 gifts bought, and a list for a few more. I am wondering whether we will send out one family gift to everyone, or one from Geoff and I, and then Elijah sends his own gift (thinking that Elijah will send out pictures of himself. Yes, he's that vain). I'll talk it over with Geoff.

I'm closing with a quote from House.

Patient #2: I can't get my contact lenses out.
House: Out of what - they're not in your eyes.
Patient #2: They're red.
House: That's because you're trying to remove your corneas.

Free Day

No Mom To Mom today, or next week. It was a nice to not have to rush out the door at 8am to drive Geoff to work. A second car would be oh so handy, but I think it will be a few years before we do that. Let's just focus on house payments for a while.

My mom went to Toronto this week, her first time flying east, her first time going east of Saskatchewan. I'm curious to hear how she enjoyed her trip with her friends. You all know how I feel about Toronto (Toronto sucks), but I do have 2 nice memories of the city (seeing The Lion King with the Ontario family and visiting the Hockey Hall Of Fame).

Speaking of hockey, I've been catching some Oilers action on the tube, and enjoying that. Only thing that would make it better is to watch it with my brother. The Paul Coffey night was neat to watch, as he was one of my favorite Oilers. Who knew Barney Bentall was a friend of his? Anyways, it's been nice to have Geoff indulge me in my Canadian roots, even if he doesn't care much for hockey.

Today I am going to aim to truck on up to the post office, which I figure will be a 45 minute walk (one way). It's three miles away, but I have something I really want to mail, and I do need to load up on my Canadian stamps. So I will dress in layers, grab the pod and we'll make the trek. It is supposed to be 20 degrees warmer today than it was yesterday, and I walked 4 miles yesterday. So a 6 miles walk today shouldn't be so bad.

Diane is coming here in 10 days for a visit. She'll be here a week. No big big plans, maybe just a trip up to Boulder. Naturally, a trip to Peet's for coffee, and Cherry Creek Mall to go to Harry & David's. She & I will be taking Elijah out trick or treating, while Geoff stays home and hands out candy. Did I mention the neighbor said with the bad weather last year, only 40 kids came around? The year before, with nice weather, 80 kids. Needless to say, we'll be stocking up on candy at Walmart this weekend.

Well, it's time to get a move on and do my walk. I'm closing with a quote from Judging Amy.
Bruce Van Exel: I figure I have three choices of what to believe: (a) there is no God; (b) there's a callous God who doesn't care that horrible things happen to people; or (c) there's a benevolent God who's beyond my understanding and I have to give the benefit of the doubt when He looks bad.

My Favorite Bond

So yeah the announced the next Bond, Daniel Craig. Here are misc thoughts:

-I think that it may be good for them to go with an actor who isn't largely known to American audiences. It can be hard to accept an actor if they are already well known for certain roles. (Yes Pierce was Remmington Steele, but I never saw Remmington Steele, so to me he was the guy who got attacked in a drive by fruiting.)

-I'm hugely disappointed Pierce was let go, I love him. He is my favorite Bond (I mean I sat through Die Another Day for him).

-I am ever thankful that they decided against hiring Tarantino to direct, since I think he's a ponce (there are exceptions to most rules).

-No Q or Miss Moneypenny? But Dame Judi Dench back as M? Weird.

I haven't seen the first version of Casino Royale (Geoff has, the Armstrongs are Bond fanatics), and I wonder if holding off on seeing it may make this version easier to watch. In any case, we will all have to wait and see what happens with the Bond franchise.

I guess I'll close with a quote from Goldeneye.

M: You don't like me, Bond. You don't like my methods. You think I'm an accountant, a bean counter who's more interested in my numbers than your instincts.
James Bond: The thought had crossed me.
M: Good, because I think you're a sexist, misogynist dinosaur. A relic of the Cold War, who's boyish charms, though wasted on me, obviously appealed to the young lady I sent out to evaluate you.
James Bond: Point taken.

Musical Leanings

Since I left KUCI, I haven't really been on top of what's new and hip in music. If I cared more, I could find an equivalent station here (or make a point of regularly tuning in to KUCI). As it is, I rely on tv and popular radio to find my new music. In my iTunes shopping cart right now is the new Depeche Mode single Precious (which I think it excellent) and the poppy Click Five tune Just The Girl.

Video iPods. Yeah, they're cool, but I don't really feel the need for one. I am keen on having the nano, because it will allow me to carry around pictures of Elijah, and it is so lightweight.

After almost a week of problems with our alarm system, we finally have it solved. They gave us new keypads for free. Our old keypads, which came with the house just were not cutting the cheese. I feel a lot better about the whole situation. Now, I just need to get Sofamart to get us our tables (which we ordered a month ago!), and hopefully my calling and complaining days will be behind me.

It's gorgeous out today, we'll be hitting the high 70's (or 20's). Supposed to be the same for tomorrow. Funny to think it's was snowing this time last week.

Yesterday we had company over for the first time. It was awesome. Once the pumpkins were carved, the guys watched the Bronco game, and the girls hung out talking at the dining room table. Jayla and I also took Elijah & Jayden to the park by our house. In the evening Geoff and I watched a science show, something about the best things to ever happen to physics. It was hosted by Bill Nye, and it was pretty entertaining. We crashed at 9pm though, it was just too much excitement for us. :)

Well nothing else to say. Tonight we'll watch Dream House. It's about a couple trying to build their house near Boulder and the trials they went through to make it happen. It's kinda funny because the first few episodes reminded us of what we had to endure getting our house. I said to Geoff when we started watching it, that all they need now is for the wife to get pregnant. Yep, that happened next. It airs on HGTV. It seems like all I do is watch HGTV, but they have a lot of good shows. You ever see Flip This House? Last week, a crew dropped a huge waste bin, and it slid down the hill, and trashed one of the guys cars. Totaled it! It was cool.

Okay, I'm closing now with a quote from Finding Nemo.

Nemo: Hey dad! Maybe when I'm at school, I'll see a shark.
Marlin: I highly doubt it.
Nemo: Have how ever met a shark?
Marlin: No, and I don't plan to.
Nemo: How old are sea turtles?
Marlin: Sea turtles? I don't know.
Nemo: Sandy Plankton from next door, he says they live to be a hundred years old.
Marlin: Well, if I ever meet a sea turtle I'll ask him, right after I'm done talking to the shark.

Parenthood

Yesterday was the two year anniversary of losing Dad. It was mostly a day like any other. I don't miss him more on that day than any other day.

Mom To Mom has been going well. Last week was a great session on marriage, the myths that women have going into marriage, and how those myths can ruin a marraige. It was almost laughable, the names of people I know who have these myths, and most of those marriages ended in divorce. In case you are curious...

Myth 1: But I thought marriage would make me happy-fill the hole in my heart.
Myth 2: But I thought marriage would make me whole-would complete or heal me.
Myth 3: But I thought it all depended on marrying the right person-but he looks less like "Mr. Right" than he used to!
Myth 4: But I thought love would "conquor all"-since we loved each other, everything would fall into place.

Sound like people you know?

This week's session would have been better if the guest speaker had stuck to his topic, instead of spouting off his personal opinion on stuff, and throwing out statistics, both of which could be misinterpreted. Needless to say, I will talk with my Titus II mom (Julie) and perhaps even the woman who runs Mom To Mom at our church. I just left feeling like he was scaring moms, and really they should do their own research on stuff, not just take his word as gospel.

The weather has been getting warmer every day, today was gorgeous. Sunday, we're having couples group over here to carve pumpkins, and Geoff is making his ever popular pumpkin pie. Incidentally, if you are interested in carving a pumpkin, and want it to last, spread vaseline inside and on your cuts.

When you see the hurricane symbol on the news weather, does it make you think of Meatwad? Or is that just me?

I'm going to close now with a quote from O Brother, Where Art Thou?

Tommy Johnson: I had to be up at that there crossroads last midnight, to sell my soul to the devil.
Ulysses Everett McGill: Well, ain't it a small world, spiritually speaking. Pete and Delmar just been baptized and saved. I guess I'm the only one that remains unaffiliated.

Baby Bunk

I've read some questionable articles about pregnancy and baby health, but I always take everything I read (and hear) with a grain of salt.

The first article was about the "appropriate" weight a pregnant woman should gain. When I was pregnant, I was concerned about my weight gain, not wanting to gain too much, but also wanting to provide enough nutrients for Elijah. I do think some women do not gain enough weight, some women gain too much, and sometimes you can't control what health issues arise (gestational diabetes). I did agree with one thing the writer said, which is that Hollywood is not helping women have healthy pregnancies by flaunting unhealthy pregnancies of celebrities.

The other article was about traditional baby food myths being hooey. That you should feed your baby anything, that you don't need to follow "the rules". You know, like first they get cereal, then yellow vegetables, ect. It isn't going to change the decisions I've made about how I feed Elijah, I will continue along the traditional method. I am willing to expose him to different foods, I'd love for him to have a palate like his father.

You have to give it to Nick Park for having such a good attitude in the face of personal disaster (Aardman studio burns). Wallace and Gromit's creator, Nick Park, said the earthquake in South Asia helped put the loss into perspective.

"Even though it is a precious and nostalgic collection and valuable to the company, in light of other tragedies, today isn't a big deal," he said.
It really is such a shame to lose that history, it must make them feel sick to their stomachs to think of it.

Yes, it's still snowing, but it has at least stopped acumulating. Laugh it up Albertans, we will see who has the longer, colder winter in the end.

I can take solace in the warmth of my home, turn on the fireplace and enjoy a mug of hot chocolate. Life isn't so bad. :)

I'll close with a quote from Wallace & Gromit: A Close Shave.

Wallace: Won't you come in? We were just about to have some cheese.
Wendolene: Oh no, not cheese. Sorry. Brings me out in a rash. Can't stand the stuff.
Wallace: [gulp] Not even Wensleydale?

What A Difference A Day Makes

Saturday

Monday

I have a wonderful husband, taking care of our property. Sadly, I may end up having to shovel again today since the snow doesn't plan on letting up. Funny enough, while it is in the 30's now, it is supposed to go back up to the 70's by the end of the week.

Pants On Fire

Our closest fire station is hosting a pancake breakfast on Saturday. I could care less about pancakes (I'm more of a waffle fan), but Geoff wants to go. I'd love to get some pictures of Elijah with a fire truck, so unless we get some snow this weekend, we'll walk down the road to check it out.

This week has been pretty good. Haven't done much, just trying to empty boxes, and I'm watching WAY too much tv. We got digital cable, we're seeing how we like it. There is too much stuff to get distracted by, I mean, I've got first season of Facts Of Life on demand. Dangerous! I am getting a kick out of seeing Don Adams on Match Game (courtesy of the Game Show Network). We got a real hoot out of watching Extreme Dodgeball the other night. The commentators were AWFUL. But the mascot looked funny, and I thought of Mike.

I've yet to hang any pictures, I'm still not sure where I want to begin. I have a number of table pictures, but no tables yet to put them on. The giraffe collection also has not found a home, as I promised Geoff he could reclaim the bookcase for books. Ideally, I'd like a shelf somewhere to display my giraffe stuff.

We set a date for the housewarming party, Saturday, November 12. Come on by!

Oh yeah, I saw Chewbacca on a street corner today. He was just waving at people.

I'm going to close now with a quote from So I Married An Axe Murderer.

Charlie Mackenzie: Dad, how can you hate "The Colonel"?
Stuart Mackenzie: Because he puts an addictive chemical in his chicken that makes ya crave it fortnightly, smartass!

Life Is Great!

This is a picture of the road around the corner from our place.

It feels good to be starting a new week, leaving behind a week that was way stressful and exhausting. There are still plenty of boxes to unpack, but they aren't important ones. There is still plenty to organize and decide final placements of. And a ton of stuff in the garage that can get moved into the basement.

We're aiming to have a housewarming party on November 12, but no time has been set. So those wanting to travel out from CA (or we'd even welcome some Canucks), come on by! We should have the house in order by then.

Did you ever see something and wonder if it was really happening? We ordered pizza on Wednesday night, and the delivery guy got out of his car, and in a flash he had thrown the pizza, rolled out of his car, and the car started driving over the curb and onto our neighbors lawn. I felt like I was watching an episode of Punk'd. The driver wasn't hurt, and no damage seemed to be done, but it was one of the craziest things I'd ever witnessed.

So, with all the house stuff lsat week, we didn't make it to the birthday party Elijah was invited to. I felt like it was too much, that I had bitten off more than I could chew. So we passed, but I am trying to reschedule it as a play date at the pool. I am eager to go, so we just have to find a day that works.

In the fantasy world where my evenings aren't tied down to being a mom...Lemony Snicket is coming to Denver! I could (in theory) get book the twelfth autographed and meet him! In the fantasy world where I could just go out on a Monday night. I'd send Geoff if I thought he'd go for it, but I don't see that happening. Maybe we can work something out, but I'm not sure what kind of time commitment it would be, plus I'd have to drive to downtown Denver.

Alright I've saved the best news for last. Get ready to do a dance of joy....

I'm going to be an auntie again!

Dawn and Colin are expecting! How awesome is that?! EEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!! There aren't really words to express how ecstatic I am. Now I have to get up to Edmonton next year for sure!

I'm closing with a quote from Ocean's 11.

Danny: How's your wife?
Bruiser: Pregnant again.
Danny: Well, that happens.
