The Passion Of Mel Gibson

Watched the ABC special interview with Mel Gibson. Geoff went off to read and missed it, which was probably good, as he can get worked up about stupid people. Diane Sawyer came across stupid, and annoying. Mel came across as the intellectual, compassionate guy he is. She wasn't all the interested in the movie as she was in getting dirt on Mel. Now, here are the facts as I understand them: they filmed for over 5 hours, Mel apparently asked them to turn off the cameras several times to recompose himself and his thoughts, and it was edited down to an hour of television. With my limited experience in television (I don't count the time I was on the Peter Hill show), I know from my experience being written about in the Orange County Register, that the media often takes things out of context, and can manipulate your words. They paint the picture they want painted, and that's what the masses are fed. So I took everything with a grain of salt. She asked him if he was an anti-semite, and why not put a disclaimer at the end of the film to tell people not to hate or blame the Jews. Mr. Gibson says he's a Christian, and it's in Christianity to love your neighbors, and he does (my paraphrase). As for the disclaimer, he said he wouldn't put one there, because that would be saying there was something wrong with his movie, that it was putting out a negative message. Gibson said, "It's about faith, hope, love and forgiveness. That's what this film is about. It's about Christ's sacrifice."

She brought up the history of Passion plays, which I can't speak on, as I don't have that info. I'll look into it, but Diane claims that they were used in the past to point blame at the Jews. That Hitler went and saw one, and he thought it was great propaganda. What did Mel say? That Hitler was a madman, a wacko, and that he (Mel) doubted that the play was the turning point in Hitler's hatred of the Jews. Mel also said that after watching Schindler's List, it didn't make him hate Germans, or want to hurt them. He said everyone is to blame for the death of Jesus, and he'd be first in line to say he was to blame.

My favorite quote from last night was this: "Critics who have a problem with me don't really have a problem with me in this film, they have a problem with the four Gospels. That's where their problem is."

I really hope that non-Christians will see this movie. Though it will be violent, it shows what Christ has done for all souls, he paid the price we never could. And because of it, we get to be free.

I'll close with a quote from a great Mel Gibson movie, Signs.

Graham Hess: People break down into two groups when the experience something lucky. Group number one sees it as more than luck, more than coincidence. They see it as a sign, evidence, that there is someone up there, watching out for them. Group number two sees it as just pure luck. Just a happy turn of chance. I'm sure the people in Group number two are looking at those fourteen lights in very suspicious way. For them, the situation isn't fifty-fifty. Could be bad, could be good. But deep down, they feel that whatever happens, they're on their own. And that fills them with fear. Yeah, there are those people. But there's a whole lot of people in the Group number one. When they see those fourteen lights, they're looking at a miracle. And deep down, they feel that whatever's going to happen, there will be someone their to help them. And that fills them with hope. See what you have to ask yourself is what kind of person are you? Are you the kind that sees signs, sees miracles? Or do you believe that people just get lucky? Or, look at the question this way: Is it possible that there are no coincidences?

Happy President's Day
Well, the sun is shining, there is a slight wind, but it made for a nice walk today. Though I don't get why they celebrate President's Day (beats Family Day), I believe every month should have a holiday. Mind you, I felt that more strongly when I had a job. Still it's nice.

My mom & Russ went to Jasper for the weekend. Just to get away. Colin & Dawn celebrated their anniversary at the Edmonton Sun Valentine's Wedding (at which they got hitched two years ago.) Colin has dj'd the event the last two years.

Like Chris was with his blog, I've been curious about who reads my blog, so please feel free to drop me a line and say hi, I like when you ______, or you suck I'm never reading this again! :) Thanks to Dawn for sharing her thoughts on my blog. My email can be found on the upper right side.

While we were out at the B&B Friday night, I couldn't recall the name of a game that I enjoyed playing in the 80's. After 30 minutes, I gave up and resolved to look online when we got home. I.Q. 2000! Geoff was certain the word Quiz was involved, and I was adamant that the name of the last planet was Equalizer. You'll have to trust me that it was funny how moronic and stubborn I was. Now I hope to find this game somewhere, or at least someone who owns it and wants to play. Ebay currently doesn't have it.

To update a previous post, Jesus has been found! The Passion Of The Christ is now going to play in three theatres in Denver. Yay! So we might try to go on the 28th.

With the Oscars in just two weeks, I hope to come up with some theme food ideas for us to enjoy while we watch. Two years ago, we had a Lord of the Rings theme, invited some friends over, and we enjoyed Lord of the Onion Rings, Samwise Fries, and Boromir Burgers. Boromir burgers are still enjoyed at our house. I'm open to suggestions if anyone has some. Last year we were in Berkeley, so we didn't do anything special. But I did yell at the tv (that's kinda special, because I usually don't. At least not during the Oscars).

Well, that's all from here I guess. I'll close with a quote from The Two Towers. There was a very funny scene in the extended edition. This is a transcription of it. It was laugh out loud funny.

Legolas: Final count...42.
Gimli: 42? That's not bad for a pointy-eared elvish princling. I myself am sitting pretty on 43.
[Legolas shoots the orc that Gimli is sitting on]
Legolas: 43.
Gimli: He was already dead.
Legolas: He was twitching.
Gimli: He was twitching because he's got my axe embedded in his nervous system.

Happy Anniversary To Us
For dinner Geoff prepared a pork roast, baked potatoes and corn. Yummy. We exchanged cards that we made for each other, and tonight we will finally watch The Two Towers extended edition. Not a bad way to celebrate 7 years of marriage.

I really got a lot out of our couples group today. One of the other women is meeting the same frustration I am with not having conceived yet. It's nice to know not everyone is so fertile. Another one of the women didn't conceive until after 18-24 months of trying. It was a real interesting time talking about fertility and a great chance for us to all bond. :) I just might feel at home here in Colorado. Wouldn't that be something.

I'm gonna end with a quote from Wonder Boys.
James Leer: Professor Tripp? Can I ask you a question?
Grady Tripp: Yeah, James.
James Leer: What are we going to do with... it?
Grady Tripp: I don't know. I'm still trying to figure out how to tell the Chancellor I murdered her husband's dog.
James Leer: You?
Grady Tripp: Trust me, James, when the family pet's been assassinated, the owner doesn't want to hear one of her students was the trigger man.
James Leer: Does she want to hear it was one of her professors?
Grady Tripp: ...I've got tenure.

Unbreak My Heart & Supplies!
The WB has decided not to renew Angel for next season. :(
Last season they thought this would be the last year, but numbers for the show have been up, and there was talk of a sixth season. I doubt UPN, who previously expressed an interest in Angel, will pick it up. Who knows! This may be for the best, based on this last week's fairly stupid episode.

Well, my Friday turned out much different than I thought. I was surprised at 5:00 to see Geoff walk through the door with roses and an offer to go out to the Bull & Bush for dinner. :) So we changed into something presentable and trotted down to the B&B. I enjoyed some potato skins (which were better than usual. I think they changed them), and a classic burger. Fridays is all you can eat fish & chips, which Geoff had, as well as he tried the Tower E.S.B. beer (they have a brewery on site). He said it tasted like Canadian. And "no alarms and no surprises" he had an Ardbeg after dinner. (Ardbeg is an Islay scotch. He likes it neat, fyi)

Tonight he's making pizza, my favorite pepperoni & bacon. And we'll watch Return To Me. Our first Valentine's Day we had pizza and watched When Harry Met Sally. The roses for our anniversary was a tradition started on our wedding day. Every year we're married, that's how many roses I get. And he wants us to make 75 years.

Monday is President's Day, and I won't go to the museum, as my dept closes for holidays. I hope the nice weather we have now holds out and we can go for a walk to the lake when the Canadian geese hang out.

I'll close with a quote from L.A. Confidential. It's such a good movie.

Captain Dudley Smith: Have you a valediction, boy-o?
Jack Vincennes: Rollo Tomasi.

TGIF The 13th
I watched Identity. I can't remember the last time I saw a good scary movie. This was a good scary movie.

I'll Tumble For You
What does that mean? "I'll tumble for ya"? "I'll be your baby, I'll be your score, I'll run the gun for you,
And so much more" I don't get it, but that song is so darn catchy! Curse you Culture Club!

Still cold here, but not as bad as it has been. We decided to got to the Bull & Bush on Monday, and now I can't wait. I'll bet dollars to doughnuts that Geoff will enjoy an Ardbeg after dinner. It seems to be their feature scotch frequently, and he enjoys it so much. We will definitely partake in dessert, but I don't know what I'll order. I do care for the Queen's burger a great deal. Who knows. I dearly wish we had our friends here to celebrate our anniversary with us.

Honey cat has been out of control lately. She's been jumping on the counter looking for food. She never did this in Irvine, and I will have to consult Dr. Jen to see what she thinks. Is it the weather, is it a phase? It's bothersome. Her fur is growing back nicely, and Geoff plans to remove her stitches this weekend. The thought of it creeps me out, so he is welcome to do it. It's too much of a hassle to put her in her cage, drive to the vet for a 3 second visit.

I'm hoping to go to Blockbuster today and rent Lost In Translation. Yes, it's Valentine's weekend, and we could watch romantic movies, but I think I've seen Sleepless In Seattle & You've Got Mail a half a dozen times each in the last 2 months. If I had to pick a romantic movie from our collection to watch this weekend, I'd opt for Return To Me, Much Ado About Nothing, or When Harry Met Sally. I know Geoff wouldn't have Mrs. Winterbourne, hmmm...maybe I should watch that this afternoon. I also got Identity out of the library to watch. I tried to watch Down With Love, but I didn't get far before I had to stop. I thought it was awful.

To turn a little serious here, we were talking the other day, and venting about how unfair it seems to always be raising money to do research on AIDS, when cancer is a bigger problem. Maybe I'm crazy, but I don't know anyone who hasn't been affected by cancer, and I don't know anyone with AIDS. And with that, I'm sure there are other diseases who feel cancer gets all the money and they could use some. I guess I'm just annoyed that so many people I know die from cancer, or have family die from cancer. I have a friend who is going to lose her brother in a few years to cancer, and that just isn't fair. Death sucks.

Okay, lighter note now. It's a month to the big day for Meg & Mike. (Meg if you are reading this tick tock tick tock). I don't remember what I went through the last month. I don't think I was so freaked, but if anyone else remembers, please refresh my memory. I remember a fight Geoff and I had months before the wedding. It involved people in his family inviting themselves to the wedding. Distant relatives. I had distant relatives that lived in the city and didn't get an invite. Because we wanted a small wedding. Yeah, stupid thing to fight about, but hello? Planning a wedding, not a stress-free thing. Unless you are planning a wedding in 2 weeks (like Colin & Dawn). My advice to all brides (I don't know who I got it from) is "something will go wrong, and you hope it's something small and fixable".

In case I don't get around to posting tomorrow (who knows!) Happy Anniversary Colin & Dawn!

Alright, I'll close with a quote from Return To Me. It's a very sweet movie.

[Self-conscious about her heart transplant scars, Grace checks her appearance in a mirror.]
Angelo: Grace, come on, it's been over a year, you can hardly see it anymore.
Grace Briggs: Nice try, Angelo. I just don't like all the questions, you know?
Marty: You tell everybody you're just the luckiest girl in the world.
Grace Briggs: I know, Grandpa, I know.
Marty: You're beautiful, and no one's going to notice your chest.
Grace Briggs: Thanks a lot.

Keep It Comin' Love
(Sorry, I have KC & The Sunshine Band's Keep It Comin' Love stuck in my head)
On Sunday, Geoffrey and I will celebrate 7 years of wedded bliss. :) It seems like a lifetime ago, and in some ways it was. We were young, and much different than we are now. We've grown up a lot, but we can look back on our wedding and smile. We met in high school, and had a typical high school relationship. But once school ended, we decided to get serious about each other & treat each other with respect. The following February we got engaged, to no one's surprise. We set the date for a year later, to save our pennies. My maid of honour was my best friend Lisa, and Geoff's sister Meghan was my bridesmaid (both of whom looked great). Geoff's best man was Barry (Rick), and Doug served as a groomsmen. It was a small wedding, by the standard of other weddings I've attended. It was a lot of fun, but I wouldn't go through that again. Weddings are high stress, and a lot of work. Once is plenty. I could spend all day recounting the day for you, but I won't. But I will include the lyrics to one of the songs we danced to.

beautiful, you're beautiful, as beautiful as the sun
wonderful, you're wonderful, as wonderful as they come
and i can't help but feel attached
to the feelings i can't even match
with my face pressed up to the glass, wanting you
beautiful, you're beautiful, as beautiful as the sky
wonderful, it's wonderful, to know that you're just like I
and i'm sure you know me well, as i'm sure you don't
but you just can't tell
who'll you love and who you won't
and i love you, as you love me
so let the clouds roll by your face
we'll let the world spin on to another place
we'll climb the tallest tree above it all
to look down on you and me and them
and i'm sure you know me well, as i'm sure you don't
but you just can't tell, who you'll love and who you won't
don't let your life wrap up around you
don't forget to call, whenever
i'll be here just waiting for you
i'll be under your stars forever
neither here nor there just right beside you
i'll be under the stairs forever
neither here nor there just right beside you

The funny thing about weddings is everyone wants to go to them. I don't really get that. Is it the (relatively) free food? Or is it seeing two in love tie the knot? I have only been to two weddings where I wasn't required to participate. Since Doug & Kirsty's wedding, I've been inclined to think that's the way to go, as a spectator. But in my heart of hearts, there are certain people if they asked me to participate, I wouldn't hesitate to say yes. On the other hand, there are weddings I would not like to be in. It would be odd if they asked me, but I should be prepared for that to happen. I have been asked to be a bridesmaid for Meghan's wedding next month. And I was hesitant at first, but it has grown on me. It's not about me, but about Meg wanting me to share in her day. This will be my third bridesmaid dress, and I will try to post pictures from the wedding on my website when we get back. Frankly, I clean up nicely. It's like a photo capture of what I could like like if I put that much effort into myself. Click here to see pictures of me as a bridesmaid.

It snowed all day yesterday, and I can't recall when it's been that cold before. Thank goodness it wasn't anything like the -52 Edmonton had a little while ago. Or so I'm told. But I secured Geoff & I tickets to Coral Reef the new IMAX movie that opens in March. We'll get to see it next Wednesday. Haven't been to an IMAX movie since Everest. Today the sun is out, but I think I'll stay in and read & watch DVDs. Yes, I lead a rough life.

Well, I'll close with two quotes from Sleepless In Seattle. In honor of St. Valentines Day.

Jonah Baldwin: Talk to her, dad. She's a doctor.
Sam Baldwin: Of what? Her first name could be Doctor.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Jay: Well, this is fate! She's divorced, we don't want to redo the cabinets, and you need a wife. What do they call it when everything intersects?
Sam Baldwin: The Bermuda Triangle.

You Might Think I'm Crazy
Look out now, I'm in 80's mode. I've been listening to 80's music all day, and I have more coming my way from the library soon. It drives Geoff crazy that I love 80's music, but I secretly think he finds it adorable. I generally don't subject him to it. Some of it is because it's fun music, and some of it is because certain songs remind me of people, places, experiences, or movies. Pointer Sisters make me think of my dad, he liked them. The Cars remind me of a road trip I took with my family. Huey Lewis reminds me of when I was in dance. Genesis reminds me of my Uncle Barry.

I was trying to put up more pictures around the house today. Geoff gave me some frames for Christmas, and I finally got around to hanging them. We have many bare walls in our place, and I have designs on putting some posters into frames (someday). So I'm trying to save room for those one day. Also I feel like our place has tons of photos of us, and so I'm trying to find was to display photos that aren't us. The thing about frames, I love when people buy them for me, but I want the option to hang it or set it up. I hate that not all frames come with that option!

I got two books out of the library to read. Yes, even though I have three books I'm in the middle of. The books I got are fiction, the books I'm reading are not. I got The Pleasure Of My Company by Steve Martin, and Death Rat by Mike Nelson. I've heard good things about them both, so I will be anxious to start those tomorrow afternoon.

For my Calgary fans (I could have fans), Easily Amused is playing at the University of Calgary on March 17 at noon. You should go for me. UofC has a beautiful campus. I've been once, when Doug, Geoff & I went for Geoff's conference. That was a fun trip. We blew a tire like 40 minutes outside of Edmonton. Then we played hacky-sack in the grass divider while we waited for AAA. Ah, good times, good times.

In keeping with an 80's themes, I'll end with a quote from The Breakfast Club. God Bless Mr. Mills for letting us watch this in CALM class. :)
John: Hey, how come Andrew gets to get up? If he gets up, we'll all get up, it'll be anarchy.

Where's Jesus?
The Passion Of The Christ isn't going to play in Denver. Weird. We'll have to drive up to Boulder to see it. I'm hoping to hit Blockbuster this week to rent Lost In Translation (which Chris liked), Intolerable Cruelty, and Seabiscuit.

I watched The Shrink Is In this weekend. It stars David & Courtney Cox Arquette. I enjoyed it, it was a good "watch on tv" movie. I think they are a neat couple. I also watched Hackers, and Geoff sat through some of it. I rented Down With Love & Bringin' Down The House, but haven't gotten to them yet. If you've got an opinion on either of them, drop me a line.

Did some sewing at work today, getting the last of the Machu Picchu stuff ready. The gift shop is filled with great Peruvian items. Ah, if I had money, I'd buy me a llama. A stuffed one naturally. Where would I put a real one?

I got some great cds out of the library today: Huey Lewis & The News greatest hits, Pretty In Pink soundtrack, Weird Al Yankovic UHF, Peter & the Wolf (narrated by David Bowie), and INXS Elegantly Wasted. I put 44 items on hold, and picked up 14 today. Crazy. I'm out of control!

It's only fitting to end with a quote from UHF.
Philo: Hello, my name is Philo and welcome to Secrets of the Universe. Today we are going to learn how to make plutonium from common household items.

I Love Lemony Snicket!

The Best Game You Can Name
Well, thank goodness I have a blog that is read by my family. Upon reading that I had plans to attend the Easily Amused concert on the 16th of March, I got a call from Dawn & Colin. Colin had already made plans to take me to an Oilers game that night. Well, if I have to choose between a great concert, or an evening with my favorite brother... I'd have to choose Colin. I never get to spend alone time with him (except when he came to visit California). I love my brother, he's so funny, and one of the only people who's known me forever. He also says he wants a bowling rematch. We'll have to see what time affords us.

It's a month until Edmonton. I am almost looking forward to it. As much as I want to see the world, I hate flying. It takes too long, there are too many rules, and I get motion sickness. I want teleporting, and I want it to be cheap (and safe). Is that too much to want?

We watched the Lion King last night. Since it was on tv, we decided to pop in the DVD as it would be shorter. It makes me want to see the musical again. :) Today at couples group, everyone was talking about Finding Nemo. We may watch that tonight. After Mythbusters of course.

The snow we were supposed to get has not yet come. Yes! I can't wait for the snow to be behind us.

My step-mom Debbie lost her dad last week. He's been sick for a long time, always in and out of the hospital. I wasn't surprised, but just relieved that he's not suffering anymore. Makes me grateful I didn't go through that with my dad. But keep the Newman family in your prayers.

Pepsi has a promotion right now that you can win a free song from iTunes. Everywhere I went I looked for a Pepsi that had the yellow lid. No where! What is up with that? How can I win if you don't sell them?! Geoff says I shouldn't be trying to buy a Pepsi, and I wouldn't if he just gave me iTunes allowance (you can set that up. How cool is that!). :) Now before you get on me about drinking Pepsi, let the record show that Colin & my dad both became traitors long before I did. If Coke had been smart enough to team up with iTunes, there wouldn't be a problem.

I'll close with a quote from So I Married An Axe Murderer.
Charlie Mackenzie: No, I tend to follow the Judao-Christian ethic of "Thou shalt not kill". But, that's just me.

Honey's Post-Vet Pictures
Photos of Honey are available here.

No big plans for the weekend. It's Friday, so tonight we'll watch Monk. I was able to catch up on some correspondence this week, which makes me feel much less guilty. I didn't get as much as I would have liked, but c'est la vie. Colin went on a job interview, which is good news. Pray that he lands a job soon and one that he enjoys.

Today I slept in and it felt great. Honey was in a much better mood today, though she did sneak some food last night off the counter. The vet office told us not to feed her more than a few teaspoons of food last night, as she's still recovering, and that today she could go back to normal. Obviously Honey was way too hungry to wait. Now I feel bad as maybe I should have asked more questions. I miss Dr. Jen. :( But as stated in an earlier post, Irvine is too far to drive for a vet appt.

Geoff thinks it's crazy that so many people he knows have blogs. He claims he had one before they were hip to have them. He also says I misrepresented myself in the blog post about how I kicked butt at bowling. Fact: I did win that game. Fact not mentioned: Geoff was in the lead up until the last few frames, until I came from behind with a series of strikes. There, are you happy now Geoff? ;)

Oh, I nearly forgot to mention...Easily Amused is playing Edmonton on their tour! And it coincides with my visit! Yay! They are playing the Sidetrack Cafe on March 16, 9pm. Tickets are $7. I plan on being there, and anyone who wants to join me is more than welcome. Come enjoy an evening of great music and fellowship with Melissa.

I'm closing with a quote from Pretty In Pink.
Duckie: Blane? His name is Blane? That's a major appliance, that's not a name!

Poor Honey Cat

Poor kitty. She went in for a dental cleaning, and ended up losing two teeth, and had a cyst removed from her back. She's still all groggy from the anesthesia, she looks so sad. It breaks my heart. I hope she forgives us.

Tuesday night we watched Scrubs (since it's been moved off Thursdays for stupid Donald Trump!), and it makes me wonder why isn't everybody hooked on this show? It's so funny. Last night was Angel's 100th episode, and it was like vintage Angel. Likely because they brought Charisma Carpenter back to give her character Cordelia some closure. Somebody at Angel decided they didn't want her around so last year they gave her a stupid storyline & put her in a coma. I still like Angel, it just isn't the same with CC. Even Geoff watched it with me. I did get a little choked up, but it was an excellent episode.

I finished one of the books I'd been reading, The Prophet by Frank Peretti. It was good, but then I like all that I have read by him. I started to read the book Geoff got me for my birthday, Men Are Like Waffles, Women Are Like Spaghetti. So far it hits pretty close to home and is very entertaining.

It's still snowing. It stopped for a bit this afternoon then picked up again. It's not coming down hard or fast, which is nice.

Lisa is a bowling goddess. :) No she didn't pay me to say that, and to most it won't be a surprise. But the last two weeks she has had some stellar games. It's been a while since the two of us have bowled together. I'd say we should do that next month, but really I don't have the time. I have so much to do in the 8 days we're there, it's crazy. Wedding stuff will take at least 2 or 3 days. One day to go out to the farm, a day with Dylan, Colin & Dawn, and then try to see my friends. We'll be staying with my mom, so I'll get to see her everyday (which is great).

That's all, I better go try to comfort Honey. First a little advice from Dr. Abby Barnes (The Truth About Cats & Dogs).
Abby: We can love our pets, we just can't LOVE our pets.

Don't get sentimental, it always ends up drivel
It's snowing, as predicted. It started last night, and it hasn't ended yet. Thankfully the wind hasn't been too strong, so it isn't unbearable. A good day at work, steady. I did do something today I wasn't supposed to. I let a small group of kids passed the red ropes. We're not supposed to do that. I watched them and made sure they knew they couldn't touch anything. On a different note, Jeff (my boss) started singing Waltzing Matilda while we put the kangaroo in the parade. He wanted me to sing something from Peter & The Wolf as I moved the wolf. I couldn't recall anything, so I told him I'd work on that for next week. Moving the wolf is my favorite. I'll take suggestions for naming the wolf.

In the last few days, I watched Mallrats & America's Sweethearts, both of which I'd seen before. I did get some movies I haven't seen, but I haven't watched them yet. Honey goes to the dentist tomorrow, she'll be gone all day. I'm gonna miss her, who will keep me warm tomorrow?

I find it disappointing that it is Wednesday and everyone is still talking about Janet Jackson. Sigh.

Got a card in the mail that Geoff's diploma is ready, so we'll drop money & our new address in the mail and it'll come by certified mail. FINALLY! I bought him a frame for it for graduation, and I've been dying to hang it. It has a picture of the Physical Sciences building on it.

As mentioned in a previous post, I've been corresponding with someone who found me online. It isn't someone random, but rather my future brother-in-law's sister-in-law. :) Now I'll know someone at the wedding. :)

For Heather, who took Geoff to see The Mummy when it came out, because I was scared to see it, I'll quote The Mummy. (I've since seen it, several times, I love it!)

Evelyn: Where are they taking him?
Warden Gad Hassan: To be hanged. Apparently, he had a VERY good time.

Happy Groundhog Day!

No I Didn't See The Booby
It was certainly an exciting football game, much better than last year's. We tuned out for the halftime show, as I could care less about what MTV puts out (with the exception of Newlyweds which I love). I'm glad the Pats won, but Tom Brady MVP? I don't think so. He seems to be a bit of a tool.

I took two pictures of the Machu Picchu dig site for you to see. They are on my website. This is where I did the reverse archeology. Geoff and I are going to attend the Members Night on February 18, to check out the exhibit and to catch the new IMAX show Coral Reef (which opens in March).

We are expected to get more snow Tuesday night. I'm glad these snow days are few and far between.

Honey goes to the kitty cat dentist this week to get her teeth cleaned. Then we'll start putting her back on dry food. It's better for her teeth. The wet food was to help her lose weight, and she's at a good weight now (don't we all wish it were that easy?).

My plan for this week is to read, watch some movies, mail some letters, and hopefully tackle a movie. I also aim to organize some photos and maybe even do some scrapbooking. We'll see.

I'll close with a quote from Hackers (I have to get this on DVD soon).
Dade: Who's that?
Phantom Phreak: Curtis.
Dade: And what's he do?
Phantom Phreak: That's it man. You're looking at it. He just looks slick all day.

A Few Thoughts
Man, fasting is hard. We did our grocery shopping last night, because I figured it would be easier on a full stomach, rather than today when everything would have looked good. Worst part is the Superbowl snacks we bought just sitting in the snack drawer taunting me. This morning, the neighbors were cooking bacon. Ah, it's only like 8 more hours. I've gone hungry before, and it won't kill me.

I'm so glad Pixar is out on it's own from underneath Disney. I haven't been keen on a lot of what Disney has done in the last decade, exceptions being Pirates of the Caribbean, Mulan, & The Lion King. Pixar is what makes them money, and Eisner's greed just lost Disney a whole lot of money. Yes, Pixar loses it's rights to the movies they made under Disney (Monster's Inc, Finding Nemo, Toy Story), but what can you do? A lot of people I know come down hard on Disney, but we loved going to Disneyland (& Disneyworld). We hope to take a Disney cruise someday. Some people just aren't Disney people.

I sent out a quiz to my friends and family a long while ago, and was thinking of making a new one. A lot of people found it too hard, I found it funny. It asked my favorite car (Rolls Royce), how many kids I hope to have someday (3), favorite season (fall), and stuff like that. I may make it easier this time around.

For those who are wondering about where Age of Melissius comes from, it was a play on a song Geoff and I came up with. "This is the dawning of the Age of Melissius". I have since decided that would be the name of my production company. I like making movies on my Mac with iMovie, and I hope to someday turn it into a business. For special occasions. I have made two movies thus far, with one unfinished, and possibly one on the horizon. I suppose I should mail myself a letter indicating that I came up with this name, in case it becomes a problem in the future.

Monk was pretty good last night. It's nice to have something to watch on Friday nights. I love when shows make jokes about themselves during the show. Last night it was about the changing of the theme song. :)

Lisa & I have talked for years about setting up a Bonnie Doon YBC reunion. I think we may attempt it in the future. We figure Martin will help us with locating people. It amazes me the people Lisa remembers, and I don't until she says their names. She remembers last names, I don't even remember the names of my teams. I could barely tell you who was on them. But ask me about some song or some movie, I have that down. Odd. I only have 2 bowling pictures from all my years in bowling. I haven't gone bowling much since I left YBC. I have gone 10 pin a few times (I'm usually better than those I go with). The last time I went 5 pin was with Colin, Dawn, Dylan, and Geoff, the evening after the funeral. I figure it was a good way to think of Papa. I don't have to tell you who had the high score. ;)

The oddest thing happened this week. I got a few emails from people who found me either on Gradfinder or online. It's just funny to me, because I generally don't get a lot of email. But I've emailed a few people I found on Gradfinder, and some who've emailed me and I haven't bothered to email back. Not meaning to be rude, but I didn't have anything to say.

I'm gonna close with a quote from A League Of Their Own. I saw it in the theatre, I have the DVD, I love it.

Walter Harvey: It's funny to you. Your drinking is funny. You're a young man, Jimmy: you still could be playing, if you just would've laid off the booze.
Jimmy Dugan: Well, it's not exactly like that... I hurt my knee.
Walter Harvey: You fell out of a hotel. That's how you hurt it.
Jimmy Dugan: Well, there was a fire.
Walter Harvey: Which you started, which I had to pay for.
Jimmy Dugan: Well, now, I was going to send you a thank-you card, Mr. Harvey, but I wasn't allowed anything sharp to write with.

Weekend Plans
Our church is doing a fast tonight/tomorrow to prepare for the 40 Days of Purpose. We will be partaking, and I was leery, but we were given instructions on how to fast safely. It will be only for 24 hours, and we will end the fast tomorrow night with a trip to Chick-Fil-A. Erik has been going on about Chick-Fil-A forever, so we'll finally go. It's on the way home from church, and since it's closed on Sundays, this is a great opportunity.

It's almost February, and that means our anniversary is coming up. We will go out to dinner (Bull & Bush), and exchange cards, but I think that will be the extent of it. Money is tight with only one income, and really, we have plenty of stuff, we don't need more. But I will get flowers as that is tradition. :) Colin & Dawn's anniversary is also in February (we make it easy on family). It just worked out that way. Maybe the four of us will celebrate with a McCain's deep & delicious cake in March. Mmmm.

So, I was given a more thorough update on what Chris has been up to (I like thorough) and he's back in Edmonton. Hey, there have been many days I would've loved to trade the U.S. for Canadian living. Now I'm anxious to try to see him for coffee. Geoff says I have to stop reacquainting with old friends because we hardly have enough time to see everyone. :) We've never taken a trip where there wasn't family. Someday. I like visiting Edmonton, seeing the old haunts, hanging with old friends. Geoff says he can do without, which is why I usually visit solo. I don't know when I'll get to do that, especially with me not having money, or if a baby comes along. I think my family should pool their money for a "bring Melissa to Edmonton" trip. Ha ha!

Well, not much else to say. We'll be watching the Superbowl this weekend despite the Broncos screwing up and not making it in. I think I'll be rooting for the Patriots, and for funny commercials. I also got some movies from the library to watch, America's Sweethearts (I love John Cusack), and Memento. I saw it in the theatres twice. I'll close with a quote from that.

Leonard Shelby: I take it I've told you about my condition.
Teddy: Only every time I see ya.

What Museum Work Looks Like

This is Tovah Alpaca. I named her after one of Rod's favorite actress Tovah Feldshuh.

I finally emailed a friend I had way back in the day. I was hesitant, because I thought he wouldn't remember me. But he did! We met through bowling (who didn't I meet through bowling?), and I liked his friend. He said " I remember sitting out on 90th Ave with Les Bush as your school bus went past us, trying to pass you a note (toss a strangely-folded piece of paper at a moving target, no less)." I laughed so hard reading that! I remember the day they passed me a note on the back of a desk chair. Anyways, his name is Chris Neuman, and he says he reads my blog. His is much more interesting. And like Geoff & I, he and his wife live in the U.S. I'll take this time to plug his blog

I couldn't get pictures of Machu Picchu this week, so I'll do it first thing Monday, before the people who are painting it get there. I got to spend time today prepping a classroom for Solar System I & II. What does that mean? We get out meteorites, meteor-wrongs, planets, and stuff that's been in space for the teachers to teach with. I assisted the teacher with prepping the rooms because it was really busy, and a short turnaround time between classes. It was fun, but the job seems too stressful to me. But there were 10 iBooks set up for them to look up information on the internet.

Watched Animal House last night. If you took out the nudity, I'd love it more. That could be said about a lot of movies though. My favorite character is Boon. Geoff likes D-Day. And who doesn't love Bluto? :)

On that note, I'll sign off...

Katy: Boon, I think I'm in love with a retard.
Boon: Is he bigger than me?

This is me and Kelly in our much younger days. Kelly is on the left, I'm on the right. Pretty cute huh? Ha ha.

Well, there was talk months ago about the Armstrongs revisiting Disneyworld in 2005. There has since been a new development. We may scratch Florida, and try something a little different, like Panama. My first thought was the Drew Carey episode when Mimi is torturing Drew by playing Panama by Van Halen over, and over, and over, and over. (Back when I used to watch Drew Carey. I stopped a few seasons ago.) My second thought was of Ryan Pauley (former KUCI co-host) who got to briefly visit Panama when his boat to Hawaii fell apart. He was rescued by freighters and brought to Panama, then eventually flew home to California.

So I know nothing about Panama. I couldn't even tell you where it is. But after getting the link from Diane about the resort, I'm totally sold. It'll be scary in the sense of "what will I eat?", but I'm sure it will be an experience. So hopefully everyone else will be on board, then we'll start saving our pennies.

Not too much else is new. Museum job is good. I went to check out how the Machu Picchu dig site is coming along. It looks great. I will try to take some pictures tomorrow if I get the chance.

Alright, Oscar nominations came out this morning. And no, I didn't get up early to watch them. Please. I adore sleeping so much more. :) Hugely disappointed that Sean Astin didn't get the nomination, but I wasn't all that surprised. But it did hold some surprises. I was surprised they gave Johnny Depp Best Actor. You know I loved him in Pirates, and I'm thrilled, but he won't win. Bill Murray's win at the GG indicates he's got a good shot. And I do think he'll win over Sean Penn. I will likely see Lost In Translation once it comes out on DVD. I love Bill Murray. He should have been recognized in Rushmore. I won't go into much detail about this or that, cause if you wanted to have that discussion, you could email me. Before I change subjects, I will say I know Rod must be upset The Last Samurai didn't garner a Best Cinematography, but neither did LOTR. Also, I knew Tom Cruise wouldn't get nominated, but couldn't believe they didn't nominate their perennial favorite Nicole Kidman. Why Renee Zellweger got a nomination I don't know. I've heard she wasn't all that great in Cold Mountain. I'll stop now. :)

Colin has 3 weeks left of rehab, (not that, he fell off a ladder at work) and hopefully he'll be able to get a new job soon. I do wish I could see him more often, but I doubt we'll ever live in the same town again. Sorry Mom. But the UofA just isn't an environment that Geoff wants to work in. But we will consider Canada when that time comes. Though I'm really keen on going back to California, who knows how I'll feel in 3 years. But if Kelly ends up in California...

In honor of Bill Murray's Oscar nom, I'll quote Groundhog Day. I love that movie. :)

Phil: Well, what if there is no tomorrow? There wasn't one today.

LOTR:ROTK Rules Golden Globes!

Let me start with saying how thrilled I was that Peter Jackson's epic work finally got the recognition it deserves. 4 wins for the 4 categories it was nominated in. The only thing that could have made it better would have been acting nominations. I was also thrilled that Dominic Monaghan (Meriadoc Brandybuck) was on hand, along with Elijah Wood (Frodo Baggins) to celebrate the wins.

Okay what I was less than thrilled about. The Office wins in the two categories it's nominated in? I'm sure it's a great show, I love British humour. But seriously, who gets BBC America? The thing I've always hated about the GG is their preference for HBO shows. I felt Monk should have one at least one of the awards it was up for, Best Actor (Tony Shalhoub), Best Actress (Bitty Schram), and Best Comedy.

So I didn't feel like there were a lot of surprises at the GG, except I thought it was a bad day for fashion.

Tomorrow the Oscar nominations will be announced, and I'm really hoping TPTB (the powers that be) have heard the swell of people who want to see Sean Astin get a nom for his portrayal of Samwise Gamgee in LOTR.

Alright, now back to the real world. My in-laws just got back from Hawaii, and we got a dump of snow yesterday. The weather people said it wouldn't hit us, just the mountains. I never believe those weather people anyway. In other exciting news, Kelly posted about me in her blog. *Blush* Hee hee. The Peanuts/OutKast video got a mention on Ain't It Cool News. I got the link from this guy Roland I know, I don't know where he found it.

Museum work is good, I'm really enjoying it. I finished a book I was reading, The Funny Thing Is... by Ellen DeGeneres. It was funny, I enjoyed her first book too. I haven't made time yet to listen to the new Easily Amused CD, but we did listen to Chris Thomas King's CD The Legend Of Tommy Johnson. It was good. I'm no blues expert (though I know one), but I liked it. I also listened to Barenaked Ladies' Everything To Everyone, and it was okay. I've had experiences of not loving their CDs and then having them grow on me. But I do love the song For You. I got the cd from Kevin. I also got the new Josh Groban cd out of the library, but I haven't listened to it either. Makes you wonder what exactly I do if I don't have time to listen to new music? :) Not much.

Monk was awesome on Friday! John Turturro played Monk's brother, and played it well. I like him, he's a good actor. I think the movie I saw him first in was Quiz Show (which is fabulous). But more recently, we loved him in O Brother, Where Art Thou? Let's end with a quote from that.

Pete: Wait a minute. Who elected you leader of this outfit?
Ulysses Everett McGill: Well Pete, I figured it should be the one with the capacity for abstract thought. But if that ain't the consensus view, then hell, let's put it to a vote.

When You Mix OutKast & Peanuts
(updated 2/11/04) the website that put on this hilarious video has been asked by the Peanuts people to cease. Sorry, try to find it from someone. I'm sure it is lurking someone online.

Just Another Day

I watched Hiding Out today. I may watch it again tomorrow. I like it, it's funny. I also spent the last of my iTunes money I got for Christmas. To give you an idea of my musical taste, I bought Cumbersome by Seven Mary Three, Can You Forgive Her? by Pet Shop Boys, and I Like The Way by Hi-Five. I think maybe I should be ashamed of the last one, but sadly I'm not. At the iTunes music store, they added the feature of browsing charts, and I was perusing the 1991 chart, and I remember where I was listening to certain songs. Or school dances they were played at. FYI, 1991 was my 9th grade year. I loved 9th grade (for my American friends, 9th grade is the last year of junior high or middle school).

Still haven't tackled the journal yet. I did have a dream about my dad this week, but it escapes me now what it was about. Last night, I dreamt Geoff was competing in some championship football game. His team was winning, and they were getting ready to engrave the trophy rings with the players names. Oddly enough my Uncle Kim was also on Geoff team, and he wanted it known that I was his niece. I kept saying, but I'm also Geoff's wife. And he'd keep saying "and my niece". I stopped trying to decipher my dreams. They are usually random wackiness. And I have other things I could dwell on.

I got 2 Chris Thomas King albums out of the library. He is a blues guitarist. He was in the movie O Brother, Where Art Thou? He played Tommy Johnson, the guy who sold his soul to the devil. We'll probably listen to him tonight.

We watched the State Of The Union Address the other night. Well, Geoff watched it, I listened to it. But it got me thinking of my Top Five President movies. Geoff was able to name them all. That kind of thing impresses me.

Top Five President Movies
1. All The President's Men
2. Dick
3. The American President
4. Dave
5. Independence Day

Well, that's a good note to end on. I'll close with a quote from The American President. It's one of my favorite scenes. Can you believe Kelly lives in D.C. and hasn't seen this movie? ;)

Sydney Ellen Wade: Hello?
President Andrew Shepherd: Yeah, hi, is this Sydney?
Sydney Ellen Wade: Leo?
President Andrew Shepherd: No, this is Andrew Shepherd.
Sydney Ellen Wade: Oh! It's Andrew Shepherd! Yeah, you're hilarious, Richard, you're just a regular riot!
President Andrew Shepherd: No, this isn't Richard, this is Andrew Shepherd.
Sydney Ellen Wade: Oh! Well, I'm so glad you called, because I forgot to tell you today what a nice ass you have. I'm also impressed that you were able to get my phone number given the fact that I don't have a phone. Good night, Richard.
President Andrew Shepherd: Uh, this isn't Richard-
[Sydney hangs up]
President Andrew Shepherd: This used to be easier.

What I Bought With Kelly's Gift Certificate

So Kelly gave me a gift certificate for my birthday, and I bought The Best Of Corey Hart, and Hiding Out. Call me a loser, I don't care. I like Corey Hart, he puts out good music.

Hiding Out is a good movie. I have a thing for Jon Cryer movies. I used to have a thing for Keith Coogan, and I love Annabeth Gish. The premise of the movie is Andrew (Cryer) is a stockbroker who has to testify against the mob, and when one of the other witness ends up dead, he goes into hiding. He decides to change his look and hide out at his cousin Patrick's (Coogan) high school. He gets his name off a coffee can, Maxwell Hauser. It's funny, and sweet, so I bought it.

It really did snow all day, it must have stopped some time last night. Went back to work at the museum today. No Machu Picchu work today. I can hardly wait for it to open so I can show Geoff the work I did. I will try to take pictures of it for everyone else.

I know I usually end with a movie quote, but I wanted to end with the lyrics to the Radiohead song I was listening to today. This song always makes me melancholy, but not in a bad way. I think I can look back on my past with bittersweetness. If that makes sense. I don't think I even get what I'm trying to say.

Lurgee (by Radiohead, off the album Pablo Honey)

I feel better, I feel better now you've gone.
I got better, I got better, I got strong.

I feel better, I feel better now there's nothing wrong.
I got better, I got better, I got strong.

Tell me something, tell me something I don't know.
Tell me one thing, tell me one thing, and let it go.

I got something, I got something, heaven knows.
I got something, I got something, I don't know.

I just got the new Easily Amused CD in the mail! It's called Simple Stuff, and it's their second album. Easily Amused is from Winnipeg, MB, and I saw them when they played on the UCI campus. We tried to get them on KUCI, but it didn't work out. They have another tour they just started, but sadly they don't have Denver on their route. :( But visit their website, and order a copy of Novice, their debut album. You can hear clips from songs, read Renee or Keith's journal, and find out where they are touring. I will try to post a review of the new album this week.

It's snowing. It's been snowing all day. I haven't left the comfort of my home, but I did at least get dressed.

I got some movies from the library, chick flicks that Geoff wouldn't watch with me. I tackled one, and I still have another. The one I watched was A Guy Thing. I love Julia Stiles & Jason Lee, so it seemed a safe bet. It also has Selma Blair, whom I don't like so much. There's something about her, I don't care about. Who knows. Anyways, it was alright, I wasn't expecting much. I wouldn't buy it, and could think of better Jason Lee or Julia Stiles movies.

I am moving to 2 days a week at the museum. I had a great day yesterday. I got to work on the Machu Picchu exhibit (which opens in Feb). I got to bury artifacts in cement for the kids to dig up. Oh, and I told Jeff (my boss) about Cindy's son Alec being a HUGE dinosaur guy, and he said he'd arrange for a behind the scenes tour for him when they come to visit this spring. I'll have to email him to tell him.

Hard to believe we're near the end of January. I have a feeling this year is going to fly by too.

Last Friday, it would have been Dad & Debbie's 5th anniversary. I think she's doing okay. We all are, I guess. There was moment last week when I thought he wasn't gone. I thought, how could he be gone? He's so young. And in an instant reality sunk in. And I wondered where that funny thought had come from. Geoff & I talk about death more frequently now. We talk about what our families would want, what we want. My mom has let me know songs she'd like, but I told her she's not allowed to die for a good long time.

Okay enough with the morbid death talk. Things here are good. I'd like to have more to share, but nothing else is going on. I'd share my thoughts on current events, but frankly, I don't read the paper, and I don't like to watch the news. So why there was a caucus in Iowa, I don't even know. And I don't keep up with Canadian news, because I don't live there. The saddest thing, I keep up to date on entertainment news. I know, it's sad. :(

Well, I'll close now with some quotes from Dogma. I love that movie, and I watch it EVERY time it's on. If you can get past the language, it's pretty good. First, Geoff's favorite quote:

Bethany: What gear are you in?
Jay: "Gear"?
---------------------------------------
Metatron: However, if you should decide to stop being selfish and accept your responsibility, you won't be alone. You'll have support.
Bethany: What, more angels?
Metatron: Prophets. Two of them. The one who speaks - and he will, at great lengths, whether you want him to or not - will make mention of himself as a prophet. The other one... well, he's the quiet type, but he'll be helpful just the same.

Yesterday Geoff made truffles. Mmmmm. I think he's spent most of the weekend in the kitchen. He likes it there, he has a lot of toys. At least 3 times he mentioned how much he loves the spatula I bought him for Christmas.

I reunited with an old friend the last few months. We had a falling out 2 or 3 years ago. She's had a falling out with a few of my friends, and I felt I had to tell one of them that we reunited. They were fine with it, and I feel I have to tell one of my other friends. The thing of it is, we were able to patch up what had gone wrong. And I missed her. I've known her for a long time, and she's known my family a long time. So when Dad passed away, I had to let her know. Also she's experienced the death of an immediate family member. It's actually sad to me the number of friends I have in that situation.

It's been a pretty good week I guess. We've had a lot of good talks, and we enjoyed a trip to Peet's & Cold Stone together. I think I'll tackle the stack of books I got for Christmas & my birthday. The bed in the spare bedroom is right beside the window, and looks to be a great place to sit and read, or listen to my iPod and watch the world. I did buy a journal, I just have to start it.

You've Got Mail is on tv (I love that movie), so I'll close with a quote from it.

Joe Fox: N-Y-one-five-two. One hundred and fifty-two. He's... 152 years old. He's had 152 moles removed, so now he's got 152 pock marks on his face.
Kathleen Kelly: The number of people who think he looks like Clark Gable.
Joe Fox: 152 people who think he looks like a Clark BAR.
